Tree 12. Descendants of Walter MUCHAMORE
(Malborough 170x)

This tree originated in Malborough and may be an offshoot of Tree 01 and related to Tree 114. (Click here for a diagram showing the possible links between the three trees.) A discussion of the broader relationships between the various Stokenham trees is available here.

In the second generation, John moved to Churchstow. Two generations later, John moved to Dartmouth and his descendants have lived there or nearby until this day. The only people to move away from Devon before recent times were George Deane, who moved to Basingstoke, Hampshire, in 1933, and Edwin Charles Burnell, who moved to Whitby, Yorkshire, around 1940.

This possible link is suggested by the presence of a father and son both called Walter in Family 2121 in Tree 01 as well as in this family. It seems quite likely that this Walter is the same person as the second Walter in Family 2121. However, no such baptism record has yet been found.

It appears that John deserted his wife about 1808 and settled in Plymstock, where he had a child and married after the requisite 7 year period had elapsed.

Elizabeth may have required the consent of parents for her second marriage because she was technically still married. Her parents may have attested to the fact that her first husband had not been seen for the past 7 years.

Both John and Elizabeth took advantage of a condition the church appears to have imposed in place of divorce, which was very difficult to obtain at the time.
