UK CHURCH REGISTERS

Registers of baptisms, marriages and burials have been kept by the official Church of England and some non-conformist English churches from as early as the 16th century down to the present day. Until the beginning of civil registration in July 1837, most people were baptised, married and buried through one of these churches and the registers are therefore a prime source of information for that period.

The Church of England registers from every parish, as well as a few non-conformist registers, have been deposited in archives such as the Devon Record Office in Exeter. They are available for public viewing at a number of places, and microfiche copies may also be purchased. More recently, images have become available online.

Data on M*CH*MORE entries in church registers have been collected from the South Hams web site, FreeREG, the Cornwall OPC Database, FindMyPast and Ancestry as well as from transcriptions published by the Devon Family History Society.
